What to Expect from a Free 15-Minute Consultation with an Online Therapist

If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy, you may have come across therapists offering a free 15-minute consultation like me. But what exactly is this call for? And how can you make the most of it?

What Is a 15-Minute Consultation?

A consultation is a short, no-pressure conversation that allows you and the therapist to determine if you’re a good fit for each other before making any financial investment or commitment. It’s not a therapy session—it’s more like a meet-and-greet to help you decide if you feel comfortable moving forward.

What Happens During the Call?

Each therapist has their own style, but typically, you can expect to:

  • Briefly Share What You’re Looking For – The therapist may ask about what’s bringing you to therapy, whether it’s trauma, anxiety, relationship struggles, or personal growth.

  • Learn About the Therapist’s Approach – They’ll explain their therapeutic style, whether they use EMDR therapy, IFS, cognitive-behavioral therapy, somatic work, or other modalities.

  • Ask Questions – This is your time to ask about their experience, specialties, or even logistics like session frequency, fees, or whether they offer online therapy. They will share scheduling arrangements, and offer insight regarding their style for the first session/intake.

  • Discuss Next Steps – If you both feel like it’s a good fit, the therapist may offer to schedule a full session. If not, they may provide referrals to someone who might be a better match.

Questions You Might Want to Ask

  • What experience do you have working with people who’ve experienced [your specific concern]?

  • Do you have experience working with people from my background or do you identify as a BIPOC Therapist?

  • How do you incorporate trauma-informed care into your practice?

  • What’s your availability like, and do you offer in-person or online therapy?

  • How do you handle boundaries and client-therapist relationships?

What You Should Pay Attention To

  • Do you feel comfortable? First impressions matter. If something feels off, trust that feeling.

  • Do they listen without interrupting or rushing you?

  • Do they seem knowledgeable about your concerns?

  • Are they warm, professional, and clear about expectations?

  • Do you still have questions?

What If It’s Not the Right Fit?

That’s completely okay! A consultation is meant to help you figure that out. If you don’t feel a connection, you can thank them for their time and continue your search. Finding the right therapist is a process, and you deserve someone who makes you feel safe and supported.
