What is Unconditional Positive Regard?
It emphasizes accepting and supporting a person completely, regardless of their actions or words. This doesn't mean condoning harmful behavior, but rather valuing the individual's inherent worth and potential for growth.
If we deconstruct it a little more, it is:
-
It involves accepting a person without judgment, criticism, or conditions. It's about recognizing their humanity and inherent value, even if their actions or choices are not aligned with your own values or beliefs.
-
It requires empathy and understanding towards the individual's experiences and perspectives. Practicing actively listening, attempting to see the world from their point of view, and acknowledging their feelings without dismissing or minimizing them.
-
It creates a safe and supportive environment where individuals feel accepted and understood. This can foster self-acceptance, self-exploration, and personal growth.

What is a MultiCultural Approach?
A multicultural approach in therapy recognizes the importance of cultural factors in mental health and well-being. It acknowledges that people from different cultural backgrounds may have unique experiences, beliefs, values, and ways of coping with challenges.
Here's a breakdown of what a multicultural approach in therapy entails:
-
Being aware of my own cultural biases and assumptions and how they might impact their interactions with clients from different backgrounds.
-
I strive to be respectful and responsive to the client's cultural identity and avoid making generalizations or stereotypes.
-
Always working toward acquiring knowledge and skills to work effectively with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
-
Recognizing that individuals hold multiple intersecting identities.
-
Acknowledging the impact of historical and systemic factors, and advocating for equity and change.

What is Anti-Oppression?
Having an anti-oppressive lens in therapy is recognizing the impact of social injustice and oppression on mental health and well-being. It goes beyond individual factors and acknowledges how systemic issues like racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, and other forms of discrimination can contribute to psychological distress.
When we deconstruct it, it looks like:
-
Helping clients understand how their experiences are shaped by social, cultural, economic, and political factors; and exploring how discrimination, marginalization, and power imbalances can impact mental health.
-
We all hold identities with privilege as well as identities who are historically oppressed and those dynamics impact the way in which we interact with the world and others and they interact with us.
-
Always working toward acquiring knowledge and skills to work effectively with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
-
Recognizing that individuals hold multiple intersecting identities.
-
Recognizing that the client is the expert in their own experience.

What is being Strengths-based?
Being strengths-based in therapy is taking an approach that emphasizes recognizing and channeling a person's strengths and resources to improve their overall well-being and address challenges. It focuses on what is right with a person, rather than what is wrong.
Here's a breakdown of key aspects of it:
-
Helping individuals recognize their inherent capabilities and strengths.
-
Fostering a sense of self-efficacy and agency.
-
The therapist acts as a facilitator, working alongside the individual instead of acting as expert.
-
Instilling hope and optimism.
-
Considering the whole person in their own complexity and multifaced reality.
