When working with someone who has experienced trauma, I focus on creating safety and building trust as an initial stage, offering psychoeducation so people can understand what's happening in their brains and bodies as well as what's happened to them, identifying strategies to cope with the flashbacks, nightmares, and panic attacks, and reclaiming a sense of power and control.
