Even though, some people may think that their concerns can only be addressed through Marriage Counseling, I am here to tell you that it is important to also have a space for you to individually process factors that are impacting your relationship.

Addressing these in individual treatment is ideal so that you can focus on the joint goals you and your partner set for your couple's sessions.

  • What to Expect in Marriage Counseling:

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy, is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on helping couples improve their relationship. It is typically provided by a licensed therapist or counselor who has specialized training in working with couples.

In marriage counseling, you and your partner will meet with a therapist to discuss your relationship and the challenges you are facing. The therapist will help you to identify patterns of behavior that are contributing to your problems and will teach you new skills for communicating and resolving conflict.

Marriage counseling is typically a short-term process, but some couples may benefit from longer-term therapy. The length of your therapy will depend on your specific needs and goals.

    • Initial Assessment: The therapist will gather information about your relationship history, current challenges, and individual goals.

    • Joint Sessions: You and your partner will attend sessions together to discuss issues, learn new skills, and work towards solutions.

    • Individual Sessions (Sometimes): The therapist may meet with each partner individually to explore personal issues or concerns. Since this only occurs sometimes, that’s why having an individual therapist is so beneficial.

    • Focus on Communication and Problem-Solving: The therapist will guide you in improving communication patterns and developing effective strategies for resolving conflict.

    • Skill-Building: You'll learn practical tools and techniques for communication, conflict resolution, and enhancing intimacy.

    • Safe and Neutral Space: The therapist provides a non-judgmental environment for open and honest communication.

    • Communication Problems: Difficulty expressing needs, active listening, or understanding each other's perspectives.

    • Conflict: Frequent arguments, destructive patterns, or inability to resolve disagreements constructively.

    • Infidelity: Affairs or breaches of trust that have damaged the relationship.

    • Intimacy Issues: Lack of emotional or physical connection, difficulties with sex or affection.

    • Financial Problems: Disagreements about money management, differing financial goals, or financial stress.

    • Parenting Disagreements: Conflicting parenting styles, challenges in co-parenting, or differing views on raising children.

    • Life Stressors: Major life changes like job loss, illness, or grief that strain the relationship.

    • Feeling Disconnected: Emotional distance, feeling like roommates, or loss of shared interests.

      Benefits of Marriage Counseling:

    • Improved Communication: Learn healthier ways to express needs, listen effectively, and understand each other's perspectives.

    • Increased Understanding: Gain insights into underlying issues and dynamics that contribute to problems.

    • Healthier Conflict Resolution Skills: Develop strategies to manage disagreements constructively and find mutually acceptable solutions.

    • Enhanced Intimacy: Rebuild emotional and physical closeness, address intimacy concerns, and rekindle romance.

    • Stronger Bond: Foster a deeper connection, increase trust, and strengthen commitment to the relationship.

    • Greater Relationship Satisfaction: Experience increased happiness, fulfillment, and stability in the relationship.

  • If you are interested in seeking marriage counseling, there are a number of ways to find a qualified therapist. You can ask your doctor for a referral, or you can search online or in your local phone book. When choosing a therapist, it is important to find someone who is experienced in working with couples and who is a good fit for you and your partner.

Our work together in individual therapy would be complimentary to the work you would do with your couple’s therapist.

I would be more than happy to explore ways to support your healing and growth in ways that are aligned with the goals you are working toward in marriage counseling.

As well, sometimes people find it beneficial to have both of their counselors consult outside of the sessions about ways in which treatment can be coordinated and connected in both settings in spite of being separate providers and separate modalities of treatment.
